Is it bad to do this? Are there any benefits?
If they wanted you to move off in second gear they wouldn't have given you first. Be prepared to pay for a clutch replacement.
Big benefits in winter on snow or ice - moving off in second is more likely to get you moving than using first, which will cause your wheels to dig a hole and get stuck.
It is bad to move off in 2nd ,you are putting more weight on the clutch than you would in first gear .
It depends on how many gears your car has and whether it's an auto or manual gearbox ?
It's of no great detriment to the car, there are generally no great benefits but it is recommended if moving off downhill.

If you keep doing it you will increase wear on the clutch and transmission. It's unnecessary and inadvisable.
No benefits, just slower and it's not exactly mechanically sympathetic
Hi the downside to this the clutch usually does not last as long. it tends to burn it out sooner.
Usually have to slip the clutch to get it moving, so no benefits...
thretan it with ak-47
So when I'm stationery I can move off in second gear although it's not as smooth as first gear but it doesn't stall either.
