When the check engine light comes on, It can mean a variety of things. The easiest thing to check is the gas cap. If not put on right it will let pressure out of the gas tank and the light will come on. Other reasons could be sensors going bad, etc. On "most" cars if the light comes on, you are still ok to drive it, but it needs to be checked out right away. If the light starts flashing, you need to shut it down imediately (no driving) before some kind of damage occures.
