The correct oil level will be shown in owners manual. In general any dipstick has two marks or notches on it. Highest signifies max level and lowest speaks for self.
We ought to run between midpoint of these marks to upper level mark. Check with warm oil not cold when near a mark as temp makes a big difference.
Excess oil or overfilling can bring issues such as carbon build up in catalyst. Fouling of plugs and restricting breathing system etc.
Best all round to simply check oil weekly. Warm engine after stooping running wait 2-5 mins before dipping oil to allow correct drain back down to sump. Remove stick ,wipe, return stick fully wait 2-3 secs then temove and check with stick on horizontal position. Add oil of needed , portion at a time and wait 2 mins before checking again in same manner.
Not good to run with overfill creates engine potential issues. Running low or near bottom level risks oil depletion at critical points eg uphill? On a sharp bend ..possibility of air being drawn up oil pickup pipe and losing oil pressure. Lack of oil pressure can be damaging and even fatal to an engine bearings.
If the vehicle is using 1 quart every 1000 miles it is within specs - but using a lot of oil just he same - better to check and keep it up than let it slip to > 1 quart low.
the grid area on the dip stick the line closest to your is full and the line at the is the ' o' sh-t line I better and a quart .
He doesn't know what he's talking about - keep the car locked and the keys away from him.
if it smokes the first start up in the morning is probably valve seals leaking oil ! it won,t hurt it to be a little low on the stick ! being a little bit low is better then too full !
next oil change ,,put in amount specific for that engine and check dip stick ,,to see if the dip stick marks are correct
The manual would state if it is above the maximum mark it could cause engine damage. In fact every garage everywhere would also tell him the same.
Filling the crankcase ABOVE the full mark on the dipstick will ruin the engine!
2003 Mitsubishi Lancer if it matters. I drive it around 60-70 miles round trip for work 5 days a week. My son's father makes a huge deal about the car needing oil weekly or every 2 weeks, demanding I put more oil into it. The oil is still good, and it's not below the lowest notch on the dip stick... I was told the oil line should be between both notches on the stick. He insists the line stays way ABOVE both notches. People keep telling him to stop, that he's going to screw up his car (he's always working on it when nothing needs fixed, swapping chips around, etc), but he doesn't listen. Screwed up his last car pretty good and had to spend money he didn't have on a new one...
I can't find anything online to show him he's not doing it right....
Does anyone have any useful links? I'm sick of him pretending he knows all. He's no mechanic. I'm not either, which is why I don't work on the car myself, lol.
