The compressor shuts down to protect itself when the freon (it has a lubricant included) is low so you don't burn out the compressor.

You'd be crazy not to fix it and try to force the compressor on.

Get the freon to stop being low.

Fix leaky hoses (if any). Add freon (which is a coolant and also a lubricant). American Patriot is right, the compressor automatically shut down due to low lubricant levels.

You might also have to replace some other air conditioning components, such as the dehydrator. Please see the link below for a diagram.

Take it to an automotive A/C professional. A service is typically around $100 plus refrigerant, but prices vary a lot for the same quality of work. Do not use those kits on store shelves - they are notorious for damaging compressors.

listen to the guy above. you probably have a leaking hose that needs to be replaced. then properly evacuating system adding the proper PAG oil and recharging the A/C.
