If it's only leaking when it's running, that sounds like the oil switch. Take my word for it, when they go, oil can be sprayed everywhere, especially, all over the exhaust. If your car was burning that much oil, it would probably break down every time you went up a hill. The ticking sound is the overhead gear and that is usually associated with wear from using the wrong grade oil [too heavy because it can't work it's way through the lubrication channels properly] or more so, infrequent oil changes. Who ever had it before you, obviously hasn't looked after it.
leaks rarely stop on their own. with a major leak like urs, its most likely that the engine is out of oil.
also i would check on a few major issues. u say it only leaks when its running. u should check from where. you could have thrown a piston and put a big hole in the block. could be also why theres no oil when u got home. its common for cars with no oil in them.
check your oil
Spill some while you were pouring?
check your oil level
I drive a 1998 Hyundai Elantra, the biggest piece of **** ever developed in the auto manufacturing business. When I bought it, it had some sort of internal oil leak, about 1 qt. a week. It caused a steady stream of smoke out of the tailpipe, sometimes it would pour out, causing large clouds behind my car. I only planned to have this car for about half a year, so I have just been ignoring oil changes. Figured the new oil I was putting in was getting burnt up before it could get filthy anyway and don't really want to spend any more on it than I have to, but maybe there is a build up of filth in the engine or oil filter as a result, no idea. Anyway, after several months, I noticed it the oil wasn't burning as fast and it was hardly smoking anymore at the tailpipe. The clouding up stopped entirely. A few months later and here we are. I put a qt. oil in a few days ago just to be safe, hadn't put any in in a while. Yesterday, that familiar "tick tick tick tick tick" sound in the engine as a result of low oil shows up. Today, I put a qt. in at the gas station and start it up, but I notice a fast, steady dripping of oil under the car. It was a serious leak. I turn the car off and the leak stops. I put another qt. in my car and drive home, which isn't far. I turn the car off at every red light, since it only leaked while running. By the time I get home, the ticking in the engine had went away and the leak had completely stopped. What's the deal?
