Issue with new tires?

Posted at: 2015-01-07
The engineers and designers at Chevrolet determined that a 185/55-15 sized tire with a load index of 82 and a V speed rating would give your Aveo 5 the best handling characteristics. If a tire retailer sold you 195/60-15 sized tires they simply wanted your immediate business, and cash, and were too lazy to order tires in your needed OE size. They could have had your proper size ordered for you and have them in stock in less than 48 hours. Additionally, there are more than a dozen makes and models of tires in your needed size of 185/55-15 so there is no excuse for not getting the proper tires for you.

Will the 195/60-15 size tires cause you concern? Probably not, but maybe. The wider section width tire could reduce your fuel economy a bit. And the tall sidewall will decrease your turning and cornering responsiveness. If nothing else make sure they sold you V speed rated tires. If they sold you a lesser speed rated tire they were in violation of legal code.

not really. the diameter is same at 15". the 185 to 195 (tread width) can often be legal and aspect ration from 55% to 60% is considered wrong way to go.

check with another tyre /wheel supplier as to legality of true /wheel fit.

OEM = original equipment manufacturers so will of course be correct as no longer standard. bear in mind as we now have a non oEM set of wheels we need to inform our insurance companies as we have altered our cars handling .

No, it's a "cover my self" move. You probably should have got 185/60/15 but no biggie. They sold you those tires because the OEM tires are hard to get and very expensive because of limited production. Don't worry about it but you may want to check your speedometer against a GPS because it will be reading a little lower now. Eg. you'll be doing 60mph but the speedo may only read 58 because the tires are slightly larger.

1. You need to learn the difference between "wheels" (metal) and "tires" (rubber, mounted on wheels).

2. You bought tires that are wider and taller than stock. Probably a different speed rating as well. So they do not meet factory specs. Store is covering its ***.

Nope - You're fine. The difference between the two sizes is very small. All the service guy is saying is that that specific size did not come from the factory, which you already know,

no, but your speedometer will be a little off (you'll be traveling a little faster than the speedo indicates) and you won't have quite the acceleration because it takes more energy to turn the taller tire. you may get a slight increase in gas mileage if you spend a lot of time freeway driving.

Hello Matthew,

We can check with our parts technicians for supporting information about your recent tire purchase if you like. All we would need is your VIN in a private message to send over to them with the inquiry. I look forward to assisting you.

GM Customer Care

recently discovered I had to replace the wheels on my 2011 Chevy Aveo5. The dimensions were 185/55/15 on the wheels I had.

In order to be able to actually pay for the wheels, I needed to purchase wheels that were 195/60/15 - there was a promotion for tires and I needed them desperately.

The mechanic tells me that the small diameter change shouldn't be an issue for my car.

I get my service receipt back and at the bottom of the receipt it says "Tires on this work order do not meet OEM specifications for this vehicle".

Did I just majorly screw up?
