Is there any danger driving with these "bad" motor mounts?

I had a friend that had worn out motor mounts in an old Ford Mustang Mach I, he stomped on it and the engine came up and dented the underside of his hood.

Your car doesn't have nearly as much power, so I doubt it would happen to your car, but it could cause problems with the transmission and the seals between the engine and transmission and might start leaking oil or tranny fluid.

Most all car makers have solid steel-to-steel connections buried inside the mount, so the engine can't fall out, but a worn one can add a lot of buzzz & rumble to the ride. But, that is then up to you then, as the worn mount is still safe...

If you know all three motor mounts and the torque absorber on the front of the engine is bad get them replaced ASAP. You don't want to twist a hole on your transmission.

IMHO, you should have this repaired ASAP. Reason it that although you can drive the car there are things that can happen to make the car unsafe to drive. It can cause misalignment of the transmission shift linkage and clutch on a manual transmission equipped car. It can also cause shift linkage problems on an A/T. The main danger is it can cause the throttle to stick under hard acceleration which is extremely dangerous. If you must drive the car before you get these fixed make sure you take off very easily and avoid hard acceleration. Some manufacturers have provisions to make solid engine mounts for their vehicles. Normally, a motor mount is made of two pieces of metal with a hard rubber insert in between. The metal on either side is the attachment point for the mount, while the rubber insert absorbs vibration and allows for some flex so that the passengers can't feel the engine working. However, if you experience broken motor mounts often, check to see if solid mounts are available for your vehicle. There will be some slight vibration felt inside the vehicle, especially upon takeoff, but the solid mounts are much sturdier units and will last noticeably longer.

Hi, You can check them fairly easy.. just have someone watch the motor while you set the park and if automatic put it in gear and give it some gas, do this in both D and R. There should not be much movement or rock to the motor maybe 1/2 " ether direction. If this is a manuel transmission them set the park brake put it in gear give it some gas let the clutch out slowly and again see how much it moves.

good luck

The mechanic told me all 3 motor mounts on my 2003 Corolla were "bad". When I asked how urgent that is, I was told it's not a big deal as long as the vibrations aren't bothering me, which they're not.

I have heard others say "Motor mounts are very important! You need to fix them ASAP because they could cause problems with transmission and stress other drivetrain components."

I took a look at the mounts and they did not appear to be in bad shape and I didn't see anything during testing it that caused me concern.

For pictures and video of the mounts and test, check this forum link.

I'd just like some more confirmation that I'm probably fine driving with my current mounts. I don't want to endanger myself or my drivetrain. Thanks.
