Is my car battery dead?

The starting of the engine requires so much more from the battery than any thing else. If you jump start the car and it starts it is not the starter. The alternator may be weak but you need to have and be able to use a volt meter to pin point the exact cause. If the battery is 5 years old change it.

Lea is correct. Turn on the headlamps and get your face right down in line with them. Does it hurt your eyes? do you feel heat from them? If yes then probally the starter. If no check the cables on the battery are they really clean and tight. If yes the starter is still looking like the problem. If the headlamps are dim be sure everything is clean and tight. Then try to jump it. No start with a jump yep starter. Try tapping it while someone turns the key see if it starts if yes then it is the starter for sure. if no be sure your jumping it with good cables and have a good connection. If all fails pull the battery out and get a friend to take it to get a load test. any shop can do it.

Before you go out and buy a new starter, first have someone jump start your car, if it turns on then obviously it's your battery, but if your battery is charged and nothing happens then it's not the cause next go under your hood behind the battery to the fuse panel locate the stater relay , switch it with another briefly and start your car if it turns on ;return the relay to the original slot and go buy a new one , then check the connections of your starter to make there not loose or touching but if all the above fails more than likely your starter is too blame

They battery could be dead but you could also need a new starter.

I was trying to start my car yesterday but when I turned the key nothing happened, but the clock came on and the odometer light came on. Is it just the battery that's dead or could it be something else?
