Is it bad to let of the gas when a car shifts? (automatic)?

Like when you get the car up to RPM's and its about to shift gears, is it ok to let off the gas at that point and let it shift? Or is it bad for the transmission.

Gosh - maybe you'll get opposing opinions on this: I remember my grandfather with his old Pontiac with Hydramatic: would shift into neutral at every traffic light, and let-up on the gas when the thing was (very obviously) getting ready to shift. Everyone told him not to do that.......the Owner Manual said "steady pressure on accelerator" and the Pontiac dealer service manager told him not to let-up at shifts. But the old Star Chief was still going strong when it was 25+ years old.

On modern cars........seems to me that engines and transmissions are now governed by computers with input from many factors including throttle position - and that letting-up on the gas may be defeating the computer's logic which is deciding if you are driving for performance or economy, accelerating or coming to a stop, etc.

It wont hurt anything but you're not accomplishing anything either. There's nothing to be gained by doing that.

Now, my first girlfriend used to have an old '50 Chrysler automatic that would NOT shift until you let up on the go pedal, but it was DESIGNED to do that. (A car built back when Chrysler Corp made GOOD quality vehicles)

Probably good for the transmission, reduces shock during the change. Most modern cars have computer controlled transmissions but the computer will also drop engine ignition timing during the shift for this very reason.

You're doing it right.

Not a problem.
