Is it bad for the throw out bearing or clutch when you sit at traffic jam with clutch is depressed and in 1st gear?

First best answer to hornchurchmale. Anytime the engine is turning and your foot has the clutch pedal depressed enough to get past the play the throwout bearing is turning. It is only expected to rotate for a few hours in the entire life of the clutch, but most are good for hundreds of hours. Some will last as long as the pressure plate, others will not. A similar concern is for the pilot bearing, which turns anytime the clutch is fully depressed. The last clutch I changed - I *hate* doing that! - was because the pilot bearing disintegrated. In that case it was random - my son is too experienced both in driving and in taking care of a car to make that sort of rookie mistake.

In theory, it is bad for the pressure plate.

I always push the clutch in when waiting at the stop lights. No problem so far.

If something is wrong with it, I'm going to replace the clutch myself.

Some guy said he has no problem driving his manual car like that for a very long time. I don't remember the actual miles but I think his car is now 150k miles.

If I am not moving, then I slip it into neutral to give my leg a rest. And if the road has a slope then I just let off the brake pedal as traffic moves and I coast along. I have even opened the door and pushed my car forward to start it rolling with one leg. Throw out bearing is not meant to be rotating for hours on end. Just saying since you asked.

I mean it is called a "throw out" bearing

Not a "hold out" bearing

As long as the clutch is all the way to the floor, it's fine. If I'm in a lot of traffic, I usually sit in neutral because it's easier on my leg.

Yes . Keeping pedal to floor creates bearing wear and reduces working life. Used normally will last as long as a clutch friction plate used as you describe can reduce life to less than half.

Stuck in traffic jam stopping then moving and while sitting at traffic is it bad for the clutch or throw out bearings if you were waiting with the foot on the clutch and brake while the car is engage in 1st gear(you're not moving)
