Is driving on a bad rear strut dangerous?

Posted at: 2015-01-07
My friend say no and it is just a comfort issue. It sounds like "thumping" in my trunk when my trunk is empty. They say it could be a bad strut or spring. Thoughts?

First of all a "friend" is not an expert as to auto mechanics. Second of all you are assuming the strut is the issue when it could be something else. Most mechanics, if not all, will gladly and happily check the car FOR FREE and render a professional evaluation with an estimated cost for the repairs. Asking friends and asking here is a complete and total waste of time. Cars are not repaired by gathering opinions but by gathering facts, information, and by using experts to do so. Why waste more time? All you have to is to get one or two mechanics to tell what is wrong with the car. This works for all car issues.

A bad strut can increase stopping distance by almost 12 feet. If also reduces handling, especially on turns. Your friend doesn't know squat about suspensions. Read this post below on shocks and struts

A defective strut ONLY effects ride comfort and handling. A bad strut will not thump. A loose or broken strut will thump or bang. You should not operate the vehicle with a broken or loose strut.

Faulty suspension also affects the handling of the vehicle. If you go around a corner and hit a bump it can cause the vehicle to bounce, deviate from it's line, and even loose control.

Get it fixed ASAP.
