I have actually spent way too many hours looking into oils. Other nice options include Royal Purple, Mobil 1 and Redline. RP saves a tiny bit of gas & horsepower, Mobil 1 is like budget AMSOIL, and Redline withstands hours of race track pressure and temperature conditions well. Penzoil might have gotten better but they used to be pretty bad, so I'm still wary. On a budget I'd use Mobil 1. If Acura trusts it then so do I.

No. Not for every application. Check out the website bobistheoilguy. Amsoil is good oil, but buys their base stock from Exxon-Mobil. They buy their additives from Lubrizol, like most every other oil out there. Any oil that is API certified will provide all the protection you need. Amsoil is a good choice if you want to extend your drain intervals, with a newer vehicle. If you extend your drain interval make sure you check your oil frequently and have it tested by Blackstone labs for example to make sure the oil is working well in your application. If you have a very high performance/High horsepower/turbo engine then Motul 300V is the best oil out there. I am a fan of Amsoil, but Motul has been around since 1853 and made the first synthetic oil in 1972. The Germans actually made the very first synthetic oil during WWII for their tanks. Motul makes their own base stocks in France and uses a Group V ester (most expensive) base stock. Esters have the opposite polarity of the ferrous metal in your vehicle and form a film that protects much better and withstands much higher heat. The best oils will have a ester/and group IV base stock. Make sure you use the right weight oil as recommended by your manufacturer.
