I shift into reverse gear and my car made a crunch noise?

As the Wise Old Cat says, gearboxes withstand the occasional graunch without problem. As he also says, make sure the clutch is fully depressed and that the car has stopped. It also pays to wait a second after stopping to ensure all unwanted moment has stopped within the gearbox before selecting reverse.

It's common on alot of cars, if not all, it's because reverse gear doesn't get used much or it's because you didn't put it into reverse gear properly before releasing the clutch. I've done it quite a few times and no harm done, dont worry about it.

I'm guessing you didn't have the clutch pedal fully pressed in.

As long as you didn't hold the reverse gear in or try to force it in when the noise started, you probably did not do any permanent damage.

funny thing about a standard trans. when in neutral, the input and countershaft are still spinning. that assembly takes a little time to stop rotating. all fwd gears have a blocker ring designed to match the input shaft speed with the output shafts speed channeled through the countershaft, however reverse has no such blocker ring, so if forced into reverse to quickly will produce a very nice crunch.

the clutch has an effect, as well as trans temp, type of oil, etc.

Quite a lot of cars do this if you select reverse without putting the clutch all the way in, or too soon after taking it out of 1st.

Let it idle second or two in neutral first and make sure the clutch is right down.

They didn't say they had a clutch. And who says "Shifted from neutral..." That has a manual transmission?

@ Asker

If you DO have a clutch though, then Jay P is correct. If not. Then you will need to invest in a new transmission, because that one is busted.

very likely not. those gear are designed to take some punishment. If it is working now, no problem. Just make sure you have it fully engaged in reverse from now on and the clutch is fully depressed when you shift into reverse, And of course make sure the vehicle is not moving.

As long as it went right into gear, this is a normal sound of two spur gears engaging

My car was stationary and when I started up the car then I shifted from neutral into reverse gear my car made a crunch noise.

Im concerned if I have damaged the gearbox because of the noise
