Sounds like the alternator isn't charging properly.
Needs sorting before the car dies and leaves you stranded, you'll get about 10-20 miles once it dies, less with lights, stereo, heater etc.
Any decent garage can test it, assuming you don;t have a multimeter and the knowledge to DIY.
It's probably just the voltage regulator/brush assembly which can sometimes be replaced separately.
Battery light comes off when battery is not getting charged properly. Start your engine, open your bonnet and measure voltage on the battery. It should be around 14 volts meaning alternator is charging your battery. If this is not the case, something (alternator most likely) does not do the job properly
The alternator is not charging the battery between 13.5 - 14.2 volts. Check by touching the battery terminals with a muli-tester / volt meter with the center knob @ 20 volts with the engine running.
Your alternator is bad or you have a wire loose
I would guess your alternator is going bad.
the regulator has probably failed to operate or your drive belt is a loose fit.
