Not that big of a deal anymore. They now have 'split' boots so you don't have to remove the half shaft.
Split boots don't last. The shop will install a rebuilt axle shaft with rebuilt CV joints and two new boots. The part costs about $150 retail. Labor is around an hour. So figure $250-$300.
Split boots were available for V W Rabbits early on but were quickly gone again...over a single piece boot.(I am guessing the same situation for your car) So you are looking at the boot and most likely the CV joint as well...so like $200. They find that if one boot goes then the other is not far behind. Rubber/neoprene only lasts so long so figure with buying a complete axle with 2 new CV's and 2 new boots already on. It is both cheaper and faster to do. Why not walk into an autoparts store like Lordco or Napa and ask them if split boots can be had or what the deal is. They have parts for all makes of cars.
