My alero water pump went on me years ago and i put the car to "sleep" The alero is the worst car ive ever owned i replaced it with a 2000$ car and never looked back. PS 2000$ was the quote i got for the repairs (that included a few other things besides water pump cause if your gonna do the water pump may as well do some other stuff while the motor is pulled)
And yes stop driving that car if you need that much coolant you have a serious sos with your cooling system. (check your oil for traces of coolant you may also have a head gasket issue)
If you don't quit driving it now you will have a lot more to fix than a water pump. If it quits pumping you will overheat the engine and seize it up.

Look for leaks It has to be going somewhere if your adding it that much.
I'm currently saving to have the water pump installed and just put coolant in it to help me out until I'm done saving
