I can still drive my car with my handbrake pulled?

To reiterate, with the handbrake fully applied the car should not move at all. Have yours looked at, it probably needs adjustment, perhaps new pads/linings, and as a matter of common sense the cable should be inspected, adjusted if necessary and lubricated.

As a matter of prudence it would be sensible to park with it in either first or reverse gear to back up the brake. I always do, ever since I had a handbrake fly off (it was badly worn) a long time ago.

Please ignore the stray Yanks.

"Also when im parked, engine off and in neutral, it doesn't move but if someone pushes it then it can move?? is this normal for this type of car?"

No, it's not normal. It should not move when someone pushes it. Imagine parking it on a slope / hill like this? It would probably roll off seeing as someone could push it when the handbrakes on. Your handbrake may need adjusting, your brake pads could be low, your handbrake cable is in need of replacement etc.

With the handbrake pulled up enough, to secure the car. The car should not move at all, and it does not matter if the cars engine is on or off.

Your handbrake needs adjustment. It could be a simple job or a big one depending on what the fault is.

The car is not roadworthy and you could find yourself in trouble if pulling in for a safety check, whatever happens it will not pass it's next MOT in this condition. I hope there aren't too many hill starts where you live.

These!

Stupid bugger of a design.

H/brake cable is exposed to every bit of road crud thrown up,

sooner rather than later the cable seizes where it changes direction and runs over a couple of right angle quadrents.

brake never really goes of and premature brake shoe time!!

Good news is the cable is ?cheap!

though you need left and right and most likely new shoes.

Then it ought to be good enough for H/brake turns,

if you're that age,

but you will not be forgetting it's on,it wont pull away,it'll stall!!

Sounds like it needs adjusted, and possibly new brake shoes if they're worn. Any garage can do the work.

Yes and yes.

if you can push your car with the handbrake on then its faulty

driving it with th h/brake applied will cause premature wear to the brake shoes/brake drums and the friction created will make it hot causing other issues also the h/brake cable will be stretched

and you say you drove off with the h/brake applied so it was faulty anyway as with a correctl operating h/brake you could'nt pull away

The car should not move with the handbrake set, the engine should stall if it's pulled. The handbrake sounds like it needs an adjustment so that it brakes harder.

Hand brake half pulled means the emergency brake wasn't set fully.

Is it a standard transmission? If so then yeah, this behaviour is something I've experienced. If you want to keep your car from moving once you park, keep it in 1st gear with the clutch down, turn off the engine, release the clutch, and your car will be like a rock.

Ive got a Vauxhall corsa. the other day I drove off without releasing ym handbrake and it was only until half way through my journey I realised! Also when im parked, engine off and in neutral, it doesn't move but if someone pushes it then it can move?? is this normal for this type of car?
