How to stop my car from smoking?

These are cars are notorious for valve seals leaking, find a mechanic that knows mistus and get them replaced. your car will be fine for another couple of years.

Good Luck!Have a good day foryou!-

You can try switching to a heavier weight oil which may help seal up your rings, try a straight 30W if you currently use a multi-vis oil like 10W-30. I would advise against products like STP oil additive, these long chain polymers break down and eventually stop oil flow completely, killing your engine for good.

There was a product sold years ago that you added to your gas tank that supposedly rebuilt your engine as you drove, as I remember, it was called Motalloy Tabs. It was found however to do nothing of the sort that it advertised.

You should pull your spark plugs and verify that it is the rings causing your problem and not the valve stem seals. Pull the plugs on a stone cold engine and inspect. If the deposits are even spaced around the entire area of the spark plug shell, it is most likely rings, if however the deposits are one-sided, mark the plug before you remove it, it is most likely valve stem seals or valve guides failing.

Good Luck! PS Mitsu engine parts are quite pricey!

Does it smoke badly as you accelerate from a stop after idling a few minutes or does it smoke just running normally down the road with a low load? If it smokes a lot at take off and after sitting overnight but then seems to clear up and not smoke so much at speed then it may just be old dry valve seals - cheap part - labor is a bit more but not a hard job . If it just smokes all time then worn rings or a cracked ring is likely and that is definitely more involved to repair.

The only proper fix is to have the engine rebuilt. I agree it would be too costly for your car, about $4,000.

Rings are seals around pistons. Worn or damaged rings will let oil get into combustion chambers, the oil burns, and blue smoke comes out the exhaust. Drive it to a junk yard while the car can still make it.

Your engine is burning oil due to excessive wear. It will get worse and worse until it eventually fails, or you get pulled over and get a ticket for excessive pollution. Your mechanic is correct. The car is 20 years old and not worth the cost of making repairs. Save your money so when you MUST stop driving this one, you can afford to buy a newer car.

The rings are what seals your Pistons in the cylinder. They keep the oil and the lubricant separate from the igniting of the gasoline vapor that the injectors put into the cylinder

cracked rings is not a likely item on this one. it would run very poorly due to a loss of compression since the rings should just about disintegrate. you could have a very simple issue with a pcv valve that is due to be replaced.

The miracle in a can will not work. It's not "sealing" or removing those cracks.

You need new piston rings fitted to the pistons. Not a cheap job,

Hi

I have an old mitsubishi lancer 1993 model. Its recently started to blow a lot of blue/white smoke. I got it checked and the mechanic said there are some tiny cracks in the 'rings', what exactly this means i have no idea...

I gather it means there is some leaking oil into the valves and eventually into the pistons. The mechanic said its not worth getting is fixed because it will cost too much. A friend of mine mentioned to me about some sort of liquid you can put into your petrol tank which will seal those cracks for between 6-12 months, so just wondering if anyone knows what hes talking about?

The car goes great, its just that damn smoke that is embarassing more than anything.

Anyone know what i can use to stop the smoke, or know what the hell my mate is talking about, not even he knows the name of the stuff. and no its not the 'smoke stop' you get at the servos and auto barn.

Cheers.
