Specially if you know nothing about cars. Make model year is required info if you actually want an answer.

A check engine light is designed to stay on if the underlying problem hasn't been fixed. Get the trouble codes read and fix the problem and the light will go off.
Find the code, fix the problem!
Get it checked out by a mechanic, get it fixed or find out what's wrong using an auto scan tool. You might also be able to reprogram the control modules with the scan tool, so you can turn off the fix engine light. But you definitely want to find out what's wrong though. You shouldn't ignore your car's warning lights. Not fixing a small problem now can lead to bigger and more expensive problems later.
