How to figure out what to fix when smog failed?

If the check engine light is on,that alone can make you fail the test.It usually signifies that a emission component is defective or is out of its proper operating range.Autozone will do a free computer scan if the vehicle is a 96 or newer model so take it there first cause its free.A code can actually still be present in the computer system even if the check engine light isn't on.The inspection center will normally give you paperwork that shows what the hydrocarbon, etc levels are which can sometimes help a technician diagnose what component is defective. Its usually in the smog pump and any of its system components, evap system which starts at the gas cap and ends at the purge valve, egr system,or even tune up items so there is a long list to check.Hopefully the diagnostic scan at Autozone will lead you to the component failure because if it doesn't the vehicle will have to go to a shop

California has some of the most stringent pollution control standards for automobiles in the United States. It is estimated by the state of California that smog checks cut more than 400,000 tons of pollution each day. California law mandates that vehicles have to be smog checked every other year. If you are planning to sell your vehicle, you must have it smog tested if it is more than four years old.

This is from a website. Since you are not a mechanic what makes you opine you can "fix" anything related to vehicles? SMOG (now relegated in the vernacular as "smog") reports indicate the exceeded values of the tested parameters. Auto technicians in states and counties with these environmental tests are trained, certified and experienced as not only general automobile repairs and services but to gather the data reported in the smog tests and they know what and why and how to effect repairs. Asking here just indicates how young and inexperienced you are plus the inability you have to speak with adults and auto technicians in your city. Texting is such a poison to the brain. I suggest you reconsider the approach you have as to vehicles. If you cannot afford proper repairs by authorized technicians, sorry, sell the car and ride public transportation systems.

didn't they give you a reason as to why it failed? i don't deal with smog here but if there is a check engine light on take it to a automotive shop to have the code read cause it usualy tells you what part is malfunctioning which is probably why you failed but id think they should have told you what was wrong... could be many things. oxygen sensors. catalytic converter issues. many different things.. considering i don't deal with those tests here i guesss i shouldn't be giving advice about it cause i honestly wouldn't no what smog is and i don't feel like googling it lol. i just no if there is a check engine light on that is where you would want to start.

You just need to figure out where to find a good mechanic! If you knew how to work on cars and had the tools needed you'd be fixing the vehicle instead of asking for advice!

you should have showed us the numbers for each of them, then we could see what was wrong, as of now, we don't know what it looks like
