How to change a car alternator?

It needs to be physically the same, in regard to pulley position, and mounts. If the electrical connections are the same, what you need to do is:

1) Remove the battery negative cable.

2) Change the alternator

3) Install the battery negative cable.

That's it. The increased amperage won't matter. It just means you can run more powerful headlights, stereo, etc. if you want to.

If you're going to replace the alternator with one which produces twice the power then make sure that the wires from it to the battery are big enough to handle the extra power, if there's an inline fuse then you'll find it whilst doing that job. The engine's earth connection should be okay though because that's designed to expect the much heavier current of the starter motor to flow through it, checking its condition won't hurt though.

So are you one of those guys that needs a bigger alternator so you can have more amperage for your loud stereo, to make up for other "shortcomings"? In a Corolla? HAHAHAHAHA.

If so, you need two batteries and an isolator.

You are limited by the capacity of the wires involved.

Hello,

I have a 2000 toyota corolla with an 80amp alternator. I found a 160 amp alternator and I want to replace my current one with it.

I know how to change an alternator but because it has double the amperage of my current alternator will there be any fuses I need to replace? Anything else I should do before or after switching an alternator?

Thank you,

Have a nice day,
