a used engine depends on how complete and sound it is.
a boxed engine (brand new form the manufacturer) will be $3000 and up depending.
SHORT ANSWER: just buy a car that has an engine. Buy it in person. Have it looked at by a mechanic first.
This will depend on the car. I can change the engine in my Ford myself, but when my son's Mazda overheated I had to ask the local mechanics. One said $1600 for labour, the other didn't want to touch it. It will really depend on the car. BTW, some wreckers will fit engines, so ask the place with the engine for sale.
Absolutely not worth it when all costs are considered. Take all the money you will spend [not counting your time] and purchase a decent running vehicle. Craigslist if full of "project" cars that started out like this one but as the owner realized the time and cost and headaches he/she put it up on craigslist for some starry-eyed dreamer to take it off their hands. This is an opportunity best left to another.

Seen them with blown motor and good tranny for $850. Offer $300. That is double scrap price for the vehicle.
Figure $1500 for the car.
Engine $1300.
Misc. parts for engine install $500.
Tranny $1200.
Misc parts for tranny install $200.
Now throw in 30hr labor (estimate) at $75/hr. $2250.
At just under $7,000, you will hopefully have a car worth a couple grand.
The blown/missing engine/tranny points to abuse, or possibly stolen, so throw in another wad of cash for other repairs if it is legal.
You really don't want all that trouble just to find out the other myriad problems the junk car has.
A fair price is 800.00 plus new oil , filter, antifreeze and a new air filter and a possiable water pump
i saw on craiglist, somebody selling an 02 acura rsx type s with no engine neither transmission (dont ask me why), for only 1500usd then on ebay i saw the engine for it (63k mi) for 1300usd, so like how much it would be in total?, does it worth to buy the car and install the engine on it?
