How much time do I have between oil changes?

5000 miles or 3 months which ever comes first - however I think the 3 months rule is a BS way for the company to make money on unnecessary oil changes - every 6 months is more than adequate. The number of miles are far more important than the months. Change it every 5000 unless you owners manual states something different and follow those guideline. But 5000 is probably a good number unless you are putting a lot of highway miles on the car (then if your owners manual states a high oil change interval you could opt for that mileage) - stop and go is tougher on the oil.

5000 OR 3 months....whichever comes FIRST. That is, if you want to keep the car running in tip top shape.

. But, if you are mainly doing highway driving, your engine is not cooling down so often, so you can stretch that the extra month or two no problem. You are no different than a TAXI or cop car. They never shut them off. And those engines last a good long time.

. I mean none of this applies if you take the car home and park it right after the oil change. It can sit there a year. It is only when you run the engine, does it count.

If you run it as a stationary engine say such on a welding unit...then there is no miles...it is time that is measured.

. Really it is up to you.

. I did the mileage thing for my mom and she went to work every day. It took a year before she got 3,000 miles on her car. So, I should have done it sooner but I didn't. No harm done. I change out the oil filter as well as I am under it anyways.

Dealers/shops often recommend oil changes at earlier intervals than the vehicle's owner's manual states for one simple reason - they make more money off of you if you change your oil more frequently. Even under "special operating conditions" in Scion's own maintenance guide for your xD (included in your owner's manual/documents) your car only requires an oil change every 6 months (or 5000 miles) so whoever's putting 3 months on the sticker for the next oil change is mistaken at best.

It's also entirely possible that the way you drive your car doesn't qualify as "special operating conditions" anyway, in which case the maintenance guide calls for oil changes only every 12 months or 10K miles. If you're driving at least 30K miles a year, how much are you really slogging around at a crawl in stop-and-go traffic? Driving on dirt roads regularly? Towing anything or loading the car to its absolute maximum weight capacity? Idling the car for hours on end? Change the oil whenever you want, it's your car, but if you wait 6 more weeks (or even several thousand more miles) given the way you drive the car I think you'd be just fine.

The three months time period is in case you don't get 5000 miles on the engine before the three months is up. Since you get more miles than the average car owner, you need to get service based on mileage instead of time.

I always change my oil once a year, whether it needs it or not,

just before I take it in for state inspection. .

I do periodically check the level and top it off if needed.

It still has the original factory spark plugs in it from 1995 (Ford pickup)

and I drive it every day.

I'm not suggesting you do that though. Your car isn't going to last that long, no matter what you do.

If you would use quality synthetic an extended oil change interval is possible but an oil analysis would be the scientific approach to show just how much that is. The key factors in determining what that is, you have driving conditions, ie. frequent stops, stop and go commuting traffic, dusty environment, etc. Either way, synthetic will offer the better protection.

I dont know of any car sold in the UK that has to have and oil change in less than 8 thousand miles or before a year.

If you use AMSOIL you get 25k miles or ONE FULL YEAR GUARANTEED! PENNZOIL ULTRA offers a 15 year,500 k mile ADDITIONAL WARRANTY if you follow the rules with it! IT depends on the quality and refining of the oil you are using, but MOST OILS are at least good for 5k miles! If you know ENGINES you can figure it out YOURSELF by taking a Sludge test!!! GOOD LUCK ALWAYS!

Hello

The label is 5,000 Miles or 3 months and means which ever you get to first so take it in now

Disregard the maintenance light which comes on every 5,000. Your car is used for deliveries which puts it use in the "severe" category". Oil change every 3,000 since the other 2.000 is taken up by stop and go and idling. Time is not a factor for severe conditions.

I have a 2013 Scion XD, I work for 2 delivery companies so I have almost 30,000 miles on the car. My question is after the oil change is finished the sticker says bring it back in 5000 miles or in 3 months. The maintence required light always comes on when the 5000 miles are up but I still have 6 weeks to go on the date. Do I have to bring it in right away or can I wait another month to get closer to the date. The car runs great and the oil still looks pretty clean.

How you drive is just as important as the number of miles. Anyone who gives you just a mileage number is someone who doesn't know squat about oil life. Read this post to get up to speed on modern oil and oil changes.

You put a lot of miles on the vehicle quickly! Do not worry about time just mileage. Your manual says either six months or 5,000 miles

the your auto has it program in computer to remind you to change oil if your running that much you should have that done also check air filter so gas miles dont go away so oil, filter, check air filter k pech ok

Follow your owner's manual for the sake of your warranty.

3000 miles for conventional oil,6000 for synthetic..thats it..and use top tier gas

6 months or 7000. is fairly average - Tho most do it less time or mileage.
