$3,200.00 for the whole job is no bargain , but not excessive either .
We're talking 25 hours plus parts and machining .
Have you considered something like a Jasper , crate long block ?
Ignore the other answers that are there, they are mostly wrong. $1500 just to replace the engine, is that with the price of the engine as well? You didn't specify. Now, since your crankshaft was bad, that needed to be replaced, that is not a cheap part, on that engine I can see one going for between $400-$900. Now you said they replaced pistons, are you sure they didn't just change the rings? If your crank was really bad then yes your pistons probably got damaged too. A set of 6 pistons for that engine will run you about $300. New bearings will run you about $60, new oil pump for that will be about $80 Since they changed the pistons it would of needed rods to which will run you another $200. Water pump was probably about $40. They probably charged you 2 hours to remove the engine, another 2 hours to reinstall it, about 3-5 hours for rebuilding. Average shop price is about $95 an hour. So your looking at 9 hours so $855 estimate in labor, plus $1540 in parts. Don't forget to add prices for machining work, no engine gets damaged like that and doesn't get machined, so there is another $250-$300. And all the gaskets is about $50 bucks. So $2745 on the high end before taxes. This number can drastically change based on the shop labor price if it was done the way I describe. If they just did, bearings, rings, and the parts you mentioned, then yes you got royally screwed.
thumbs to "Ryde On".

i second that motion for sure!

IMHO,
"crankshaft got cracked for the seize" no doubt the block needs a line bore check. get a creat engine. dime a dozen for a slant six. might just get a short block and have the heads reconditioned. but if you're not doing it yourself, get an entire long block. re-manned. way cheaper and more reliable than someone rebuilding what you have. when they're-manned, some parts are changed out as a matter of routine. prolly a better warranty as well.
damn, spank you very much, next time you need a rebuild, come see me. generally less than $1000 in parts and machining
i have a 1978 Plymouth Volare with engine seized for running with low oil. a mechanic shop quoted $1500 to replace the engine, however they decided to rebuild it somehow. and the price suddenly went to $3200! should it cost that much to rebuild? the engine block is fine, crankshaft got cracked for the seize, the engine still turns. they replaced valves, pistons, crankshaft, water pump and oil pump, in a 225 slant six engine. im wondering what the cost should be reasonable for an engine rebuild, and it's relatively simpler comparing to most current engines. should it be that expensive?
