It will cost 3 times as much as buying a convertible.

The whole body shell is different for a convertible. There is no chassis on modern cars. Start with a new convertible body shell then start adding on the rest of the bits.

The cheaper option is to buy a convertible but they do cost more.

cargurus.com has a couple of 2000 3 series rag tops for about 7 grand. Do not convert a hard top to a convertible. Hard tops are there for rigidity. Rag tops have extra support built in to the body.

The problem is since your uni-body car has already been built it would be impossible to cut the sides off to reinforce them before the convertible raising and lowering parts including wiring could be installed.

It would be the cost of a cutting torch and a tarp.......It would be unrealistic to turn a hardtop into a convertable. Unless its a jeep or something.
