How loud would it be to replace a catalytic converter with a straight pipe?

Technically is illegal. It is ok as long you are in a non inspection state does does not require inspection stickers or Emission checks since it will fail instantly

But it will be a little louder & you will never get your Check Engine Light to go out & if your one of those people that is nit picky on MPG, you will not get good gas mileage anymore

If in the US then turning in a shop that would remove an emission component to the EPA could result in a reward that would get your vehicle repaired correctly 10 times over, The EPA aint screwing around and they want these shops shut down permanently and used as an example for any other fly by night shops that might be thinking of doing the same, The fines and penalties are huge and meant to put these shops out of business, This is not a State mandated law its Federal, meaning if caught without the emission control devices factory installed or equivalent you could face the same fines, weather your state has mandatory testing or not, This shop your dealing with is breaking the law and should not be trusted, walk away and don't look back, if there willing to do this just to make a quick buck what do you suppose they think of doing right by there customers? And sorry your broke and drive a piece of crap.

If it is too loud you could add a glasspack.

Could adapt a short muffler w/ appropriate flanges.

it will be more than a little louder

I have a 2000 Pontiac Firebird and I need to replace a catalytic converter. I took it to a shop and they told me I could take it out and replace it with a straight pipe. He said it would be a bit louder but about $250 cheaper. I don't like extremely loud cars but a nice deep sound would be nice. Disregarding any laws, how loud would it be and if its too loud is there a way to make it more quiet?
