How long before I can drain oil after engine is off?

Yes, drain immediately while the oil is hot & thin and before dirt settles - the hot oil will drain quickly and carry contaminants with it . . . . just be careful with the hot oil.

We allow the engine to idle while getting it into position for an oil and filter change. Hot oil drains better. More oil will come out of the pan when the oil filter is removed. Personally I allow at least one hour before screwing the oil drain plug back is,

I suggest you get one of these. I've had them on all of my cars for at least 10 years.

The only issue here is the oil will be very hot and might burn you if you are not careful. It is best if the oil is at least warm. Warm oil will drain out better. Cold oil is thicker and some of it may stick to the inside of your engine and not completely drain out. Even so it probably does not make much difference unless it is a really cold day.

So you don't have to wait at all just be careful and don't get burned. Also be careful of hot exhaust pipes and don't touch them. I usually like to wait about 20 min for things to cool off a bit when changing my own oil.

There is no waiting time . Be careful if very hot as oil can cause significant skin burns when hot.

If we want to drain without too much worry touch sump gently and quickly.. When we can hold hand against it without burning oil within can be safely drained.

If engine ran for long or fast journey it will be very hot and stays that way for approx an hour.

As quickly as possible: hot oil is runnier and drains better than cold oil.

Within a few seconds, but remember oil will be scalding hot.

How fast can you get the car up and the oil plug removed? Its ready before you will be.
