Working in "customer service" is a challenging task. I have worked as a representative and manager (in a different trade). If you have "people skills" you will be okay, but if you are a gear-head with no flexibility, you will hit the wall hard. Trust me, most people aren't master mechanics, and will not believe you that it is common to find a vacuum leak using propane enrichment. They will think you are crazy, and ask for a digital device instead. Remember, you are a parts counter person, not a diagnostics technician; even your employer will not push you to diagnose. Auto parts stores, "encourage" people to "purchase" merchandise. While your employer will pat you on the back for making friends and building a loyal customer roster, if you make one bad diagnostic and it stinks, you're going to be on the other side of the counter immediately. I would advise to be general (basic) with the ones that aren't "your type". They can become your enemy in a snap. Rule number one is, the customer is always right. If the customer is not right, play dumb.
Have fun. It won't be as difficult on your body as a tech.
The other poster is absolutely correct!!!
You will have an "edge" over the other counter people, because you understand how a vehicle operates.
You will be able to answer questions for customers that the others won't!
I think you will be in line for a raise or advancement to a manager position. Good Luck!
You can make a parts man out of a mechanic but you can't make a mechanic out of a parts man. If you're a good "wrench" with diagnostic skills you will be a fine parts man. This assumes that you are comfortable with searching computer databases.
do your best and be polite and im sure you will do just fine..
I'm very happy because i just got hired at autozone.
But i'm worried about not doing well my tasks.
My mechanical knowledge is more than average, i'm an automotive technician, but it's my first time working in a store.
