How does a home security system know when a window is open?

Your window may not have a sensor on it. (People save money sometimes by installing sensors only on first floor windows.)

If you're sure that the window is monitored by the alarm system, it's likely that there's a magnetic reed switch inside the window frame that lines up with a matching magnet in the sash only when the window is closed.

Carefully installed, that kind of window sensor is almost impossible to find.

Some have a plunger switch located at the bottom sill. Others use tiny magnets and switches drilled into the channels. Still others use magnets mounted out in the open

No sensor, no alarm. You can buy a simple one at a dollar store. stick half on window, half on frame. When the magnets are broken, it sounds.

It doesnt know when a window is open if the window doesnt have any sensors on it

I don't know how my home alarm system works, my best guess is there are two lasers that line up and when a window is opened it un aligns the lasers. I've noticed that my window has nothing electronic on it so is my window not hooked up to the system? How does it really work?
