High pitched squealing noise from my engine?

You need to immediately get this repaired! If doing this yourself remove all the drive belts and spin the pulleys by hand to see if one feels dry or does not spin smoothly. The alternator and PS pump also should be checked. Then start the motor and see if the noise is still their. The water pump and pulleys for the timing belt may be the culprit. Your motor is known for water pumps failing and the timing belt jumps bending the valves!

The "squealing" noise is definitely from one of your belts, but may be caused by a pump or alternator that's getting ready to seize up and fail. Try loosening the fan belt and turning each accessory by hand. When you find one that grinds or turns hard, you've found your culprit.

If it is not the belt, you have a cracked flex plate. I had a vehicle that it sounded like a squealing belt but it was coming from the wrong end of the engine.

more than likely it is your belt. look for a locked up drive accesory

while my car is in idle I hear a loud squeaking sound. When I accelerate it turns into a very loud squeal or high pitched rather. I've listed the hood it sounded like it was coming from the belts but the belts are tight. What else can be causing this? if it helps my car is a 1999 Mitsubishi Eclipse GS.
