You may want to consider using some good car maintenance software that reminds you when any maintenance needs to be done. I've been using it for years and never have any major engine problems with 150,000 miles on my truck. Check out Automotive Wolf Vehicle software here:

Check your thermostat setting. Make sure it's set to "cool."
Test your thermostat's accuracy with another temperature gauge. If they do not match, your thermostat may be out of calibration and needs to be reset. To do so, reference the manufacturer's instructions.
Clear grass, weeds, anything that may be obstructing airflow, and clean your condensing unit with a commercial coil cleaner.
C'mon now! WHAT KIND OF CAR IS THIS THING! iNCLUDE year, MAKE, MODEL, country of origin and ENGINE SIZE as well as trans type and mileage. THE FIRST STEP is to get a can of GUNK ORANGE engine cleaner and go to a DIY CAR WASH! POWER wash your engine and focus on the space BEHIND the radiator! here BUG BODIES< feathers, paper \, and FUZZ have collected for YEARS. This will allow air to CIRCULATE through the rad, and keeps things as cool as they are SUPPOSED TO BE! Your A/C is a different mater! Take a screwdriver and a wrench to remove the RAD UPPER SUPPORT bracket to gain ACCESS to the space behind it! After about 7-8 years, nearly ALL A/C system requires a RECHARGE and to add more PAG oil to the compressor! MOst are DENSO pumps. AN A/C machine will recycle your old freon, add NEW and make sure you have the right amounts of GAS, and LIQUID in your system! Expect a $150 or so! IT is just SOMETHING You have to do! BYE NOW!
