Have a 95' Ford 5 speed, just recently its been popping out of first gear. Transmission place said transmission was

Depending on the transmission, it could be something simple. The gears are held in place by a rod with notches in it, When you shift gears the rods move the notches over spring loaded detent balls, The balls and springs are usually loaded against rods from the outside of the transmission and the covered with a cap screw. It's not uncommon for the detent springs to break and cause the problem you're having. The detent springs can usually be changed from outside the transmission. Take to a shop that understands this and knows how to check, You may have some luck googling your vehicle with the words "detent springs" included.

Of course there is a problem if it pops out of gear. However that doesn't mean the tranny is shot in the sense that it requires a complete rebuild. I had a Nissan 5 speed did that and the diagnosis ranged from basket case to a "make due" repair that involved replacing some spacers. Get various opinions and decide, given the age of your vehicle if you want to risk a "make do" repair. But you will need to ask for a make do repair because few if any will offer that as an option. [It was a Nissan dealer that figured out my problem]

"Going out" is generic and could mean anything. They can fix it without full replacement. You might get lucky, but no one knows without looking inside the transmission and that costs money. It costs more to fix it and put it back in the car. If you want cheap, get a used transmission from the salvage yard. They usually guaranty they work and don't leak or they'll swap you another one. There's a lot of work in that, but you skip the rebuilding part.

If its popping out of gear AND you take it to a transmission place and they said its going out then yes it obviously is, it could be the shifter but most likely the transmission unless you've been slamming the gears

It certainly could be At least for 1st gear. The edge of the gear teeth get worn and they tend to slip by the other teeth and kick the gear into neutral. They might be able to adjust it so the teeth mesh a little further, past the worn part. Or you might just have to hold it in gear manually until you get going enough to use 2nd.

Ask the tranny man at the FORD dealer what he usually puts in when this happens.

Ask if there is a bulletin that leads you to improved parts.

Often, I have witnessed they just fix what it is specifically and put it back in and fill it with the specified fluid.

They do only what they can get covered on for labor.

I have always been told not to rest my hand on the shifter when not shifting gears because it adds wear and shortens life of parts.

Worn pads on the 1-2 shift fork, and possibly wear on the 1-2 shift collar where the pre-engagement teeth are. The gears are harder than the collar, so the collar takes the brunt of the abuse. Still, it's going to need dismantling to repair....

most the time the shifter fork is worn or the pads are gone so it does not completely engage...and it pops out .remove trans or remove the floor plate and pull top cover replace bad fork and/or pads...sometimes the counter shaft bearings are worn (usually noisy) then it needs rebuilt...but I'm guessing here on which vehicle you have And going with it's a T5 or ZF

synchronizer is most likely the culprit, no more than you would use 1st gear try to hold it in place, I have had this problem with several cars/trucks in the past and I would just hold the shifter forward so it could not pop out, cheaper than a rebuild!

Could be worn gear shifting forks. Ben &Carl G H the non-mechanicS are incorrect! Synchronizers have nothing to do with gears jumping out. Synchronizers slow down the gear clusters so they don't grind going in gear.

If this 5sp manual transmission, if T was recently serviced they might not of change out the throw-out bearing...also check your vacuum for leaks and check out low idea start

Most likely! it is either a bad synchronizer gear, a bad synchronizer fork or a bad shifter that is not pushing the synchronizer fork fully in. The latter is repairable pretty easily and requires no removal of the trans.

a synchro would making shifting into gear louder and a bit more tricky but the detents on the shifter may be your issue.

Sounds like a bad syncro

first I would have an adjustment on the shifter this might help with shifting good luck

ALL OF THESE DUDES ARE WRONG!! It is either linkage, or a transmission mount!

Yes.. bad synchronizer .

It sounds about right. ask them what a rebuild is.
