Engine starts with high revs but, nothing when push down on accelerator out of gear. Any help please?

It sounds like the throttle position sensor has failed.

That's an electronic unit that senses the throttle position and passes that data to the engine management / injection control system. In petrol engines, it's typically part of the throttle body on the engine.

In some diesel vehicles, it's part of the throttle pedal assembly and there is no mechanical connection between the pedal and engine or fuel system. The system may 'think' the pedal is pressed when it's not.

It could also be a sticking or failed actuator on the throttle body, if it's an electrically controlled type (which many turbo diesels use).

The exact make, model and engine type of the vehicle would be useful to be able to look up technical info...

Throttle linkage?Alan, you need to define "nothing when push down on accelerator out of gear" Does it rev when it's IN gear? This is a diesel engine, right? (glow plugs) Help us to help you.

Hi so when we see issues like this age of and mileage done is the usual cause of most problems with cars. the older a car gets the more money it needs spending on it. to the point where a newer one is needed.

Diesel nor petrol?

Is the engine turning but not firing?

By high revs do you mean with your foot on the gas?

What has the alternator got to do with this?

Probably a fuel problem, if diesel check the fuel filters

I have had mechanic out , he as changed the alternator before this started. He came out when it was happening and changed the glow plugs and I replaced the battery. Was OK for few days, then happened again. He replaced a two month old alternator he put in a few weeks ago. Was OK for short period of two weeks now it happened again last night. This morning started Ok and as run OK so far but will probably happen again.

Anyone out there got any ideas what it could be or if its happened to you would like to know solution please.

Alan
