does an axel back system increase performance in any way? Not likely. The exhaust system as a whole unit is more than just the muffler at the back. The headers off the motor play a huge part in how the flow of air comes out of the engine.. Then there is the pipe(s) that run the length of the car as well as a resonator and catalytic converter. Each component plays a part in the flow of air.
Also keep in mind that if your intake can only bring so much air into the engine, then only that much air will come out. IF your current exhaust does it just fine, then increase in exhaust flow won't cause any benefit until you increase air intake.
ANY car can be improved upon, it's really just a function of research, money and time.
IF (and it's a big if) your car's most restrictive air flow component was the muffler, then yes an axel back system might make a small improvement. I would be willing to bet it wouldn't be a noticeable amount and would probably only be measureable by a computer/dyno.
Also, just for the record, back pressure is NOT a good thing, ever. Most people think that back pressure is important because they take their small exhaust off, put on a big exhaust system that is "less restrictive" and screw up the ability for the exhaust to "scourge". This is where the high pressure pocket of one exhaust pulse creates a low pressure behind it which in turns pulls the next exhaust pulse.
It's all about exhaust velocity. Which is why you want to make sure you get a complete system that is designed for your motor and not just the biggest exhaust system you can fit on the thing.
Likely, the axel back will just be for sound.
If you want to FEEL a performance gain, then you want to get an ECU tune done and/or a higher performance cam. Best bang for your buck.
TOO general a question! Many cars are made as cheap as possible to make profits, and others are made FULL OUT< with highest precision, and most economical and powerful exhausts. AUDI is a good example! I have worked on AUDI cars with 300k miles and ALL ORIGINAL exhausts that are STAINLESS STEEL< and all original converters! The EUROPEANS meter fuel much more precisely than other ones do. Cars from the late 70's all got great resutls with aftermarket exhausts! Most P|JHAPANES cqrs get \very littleincrease with different exhausts, and same for EURO cars! FORDS also have superb exhausts that wil last the life of the car if it is tuned correctly! MOst GM cars from the 80's=90's AL get BAD CONVERTERS! GM did NOT invest enough in fuel injection science, nor did they invest a lot in CONVERTER designs or perfect converter honeycombs, until much later in the auto game! It is ANOTHER reason why GM has so many lawsuits daily, and MILLIONS to come! They UNDER DEVELOP and leave the rest to the dealership to figure out. THey live by the 80-20 rule meaning that 20% of cars will need NOTHING< but 80% will be constant visitors to GM dealerships for repairs and updates. NOT a good way to do business! It is why TOYOTA got so far ahead. ANYWAYS,, the RIGHT ANSWER to your question involves WHO made the car, WHEN, and how much technology and research went into it! THere is NO GOOD ANSWER other than that! TO increase performance on most cars is a matter of the ENGINE and TRANS updates and NOT from the exhaust! THe best cars, say from EUROPE< are slightly de-tuned for the AMERICAN market, for emissions reasons! Once a EURO chip is installed in their computer, they REALLY take off. EXHAUST tuning is VERY important and most car makers spend millions to get the exhaust just right! ANother good example is the MAZDA MIATA which is MODELED to act and sound like a British Roadster.
It depends. Most of the time you will get more top-end acceleration. Meaning if you punch it, it will accelerate faster. Sometimes, you will see a slight decrease on low-end torque (more of your every day driving). Reason for this is the reduced back pressure. The back pressure can be more beneficial for every day driving as far as response goes, but then hurt you in the higher RPM range. Usually they work best if you pair it with an after-market intake. Its like an air funnel. You aren't going to truly see results if you only have one end open.
if it was restricted before, yes.
if it was not then you merely adjust your perception.
and the chicks dig it!
Does any new axle back exhuast to a car increase acceleration and better response?
