Do I really need new brake pads or is my mechanic trying to cheat me?

Depends how hard you are on your brakes.

Just whip a wheel off and have a look.

There is slim chance you might need brakes but it is not ikely. Most cars will do better than that. I have a GMC with 145000 miles and still has the original pads on it. Have someone else check them to be sure..................

Brake pads wear out based more on how and where a vehicle is driven than how far a vehicle is driven. It's possible that driving in mostly city stop-and-go traffic has worn down the front pads faster than you expected, especially if you live somewhere hot or hilly etc., but I'd hold off on getting them changed and get a second opinion before doing anything because 20K miles is awfully early for brake pads to be worn out.

If the 2nd shop also says they're worn to the point of needing to be replaced then go ahead and have them changed. If the 2nd shop says they're fine and don't need to be changed though, you might seriously consider making the 2nd shop your new 1st shop. An honest shop can save you lots of money, as I'm sure you're aware.

seems to early to me but i never buy imports so im used to getting about 100k miles before needing brake work

That s a lot of town driving it could be right, It really depends on speed and how many stops or slow downs, when i bought my car it had 11000 on the clock and they put new pads on the front, I have done another 20000 since then and have not changed front or back pads yet

Take it to another shop to get a 2nd opinion. But for the record, brakes are NOT something one should "skimp" on.

Seems a little soon, but I have seen factory pads wear out at 25k miles. Maybe are more glazed than worn out. How much is it for the job? $50 for good pads and $80 for labor? Just ask the question, can I go another 5000 miles on these pads?

Based on the information given that's a tough call. However, basing it on the amount of city driving you do, I would have them checked out. The front pads wear out sooner then the back. I would have another mechanic look at them. I wouldn't say your mechanic is cheating you. He may be trying to help you. If you let your pads get down too far, you will have to change out the rotors and that can get expensive. Anyhow, just a quick piece of advise, if they need to be changed, do not put on those life time warranty pads. For the most part they are a very hard pad and wear out the rotors very fast. The pads are the designed to wear out much fasted then the metal rotors. Either use original equipment from the car manufacturer or use a pad lesser in value then the lifetime pad.

should be around time to change the front

but you can look at then and see if they need replacing.

could be possible i would get a second opinion..goodluck

I know its impossible to say for sure without looking at my brake pads but these are the details:

I drive a 2009 Nissan Altima. I have 20,500 miles on the car based on about 80% city/town driving and 20% highway driving. The car is 5 years old.

I tend to be very light on the brakes and it seems like its just too soon. All answers and opinions will be much appreciated. Thanks

Not at all.
