Should I add more oil or get an oil change??
I always change the oil on any used vehicle I have purchased. You don't know the history. That oil might have been in there for years.
Change it. That way you know it has the right oil in it the filter is good.
Check the air filter, cabin filter if it has one, and fuel filter.
If you do not know the maintenance history of the car then it is probably a good idea to get the oil changed. Depending how low the oil is it will not cost much more money to have it changed than buying a few quarts of oil anyway. Given the age and probably mileage you may just want to have a maintenance package performed on it.
Yes, you need to have a good amount in there. Having low oil will damage your engine. I'm surprised if the service light hasn't come on. Having low can and will damage your vehicle.
You should probably change the oil and filter if you don't have a record of the last oil change.
If it looks real dirty on the dipstick, change it. If it looks pretty clean, just add some.
