Diagnose what’s wrong with my Toyota Camry?

Is there any method to test if it's truly this head gasket? I don't want to buy and install a new one only to find out it was something else.

It's a bit of a bomb, I only need it to last me till the end of the year.

you probably killed it. may it rest in peace. once they get hot there gonners. hope you learned something here....

Letting your car overheat is the worst thing possible to let happen to it short of hitting it with a grenade launcher. Things expand far past their allowable zones and crack, break and deteriorate. Jay is right, you probably blew your head gasket. If you do replace it yourself, remember that the new gasket is directional usually (one side has to go up) and get the head resurfaced or you might blow the new gasket in a week. A machine shop should be able to pressure test it and resurface it for around $80. Also the head bolts are torque-to-yield meaning you must replace those as well. Look up the specific pattern and use proper torque, not just guess! Its vital for it to be a successful head job.

Ouch. You may have a bad head gasket. The smoke could actually be water in the combustion chamber.

My car (87 Toyota Camry) has a leak somewhere in the radiator but I had just been filling it up with water before every trip. Yesterday I forgot to fill it up and my car overheated however I was only a street from my house so rather then pull over and fill it with spare water I carry I instead just finished driving home. It backfired a lot on this small journey.

The next day I filled the radiator again with water and tried to start it however it would not start. It would turn over and crank but that is all. There is also smoke coming out of what I think is the EGR valve.

Now I don’t have a lot of money so I’ll attempt to fix the problem myself first. However I have no idea what it could be. Any and all help in this matter would be greatly appreciated.
