The cost (and even whether the owner can sell it that way) depends on what state you are in. California requires the seller to furnish a recent (60 days, I think) smog certificate in order to sell it, and in essence an OEM converter has to be used - typically well over $1000 for the converter.
There are other fish in the sea.
Cats can range from 150-1500. OEM cost more but will keep the light out.
as FlagMichael says, the seller must provide a current smog check for the vehicle before it can legally be sold......no matter which car you decide on, pay a mechanic to inspect it before buying - cheap insurance against getting ripped off !!
Something is up... owner could put $150 into it, and sell it for double or triple that... guessing the bad cat is a cover for major issues
So I'm looking at buying a car, but the one I'm looking at needs a new catalytic converter. I know nothing about cars and so I don't know how much this part would cost or if there could be anymore problems because of it.
It's a 2003 Kia Spectra sedan, with 135,000 miles and the seller is asking $1,000 for it.....what do you guys think?
