Valve bonnets (a lot cheaper than piston rings).
It is possible that the oil only drips when it runs (spewing oil onto the street). But it would likely drip a bit when standing still.
You might try a thicker oil (lower number). For example, instead of 50 weight (thin oil), you might try 20 weight (thick oil).
Sounds like worn piston rings allowing oil to pass the pistons and burn in the exhaust
Have it checked at a garage. Another fault can be worn valve stems allowing oil into the combustion Chamber.
if you have to add 5 qts every 1500 miles why change it
Only 3 places for oil to go- leaking out of gaskets/seals, burning out thru rings, valves or valve guides (bluish smoke from exhaust), or being forced into cooling system by head gasket/cracked head issue.(not real likely, but check for oily sludge in radiator/overflow tank) That big of an oil loss should be able to diagnose easily, good luck. Last 2 scenarios require at least partial engine overhaul, which isn't cheap.
My car is burning oil. There isn't any oil underneath the car ever, and very rarely do I have smoke coming from the exhaust. However, when I change my oil (every 3,000-3,500 miles) I fill it with a full 5 quarts of oil, but by the time I hit 1,500 miles into the oil change my oil is bone dry. It starts to make a ticking noise, but that goes away as soon as i put another 5 quarts in. My question is what could my issue be? What's the fix? Any cheaper remedies you've encountered? And is it worth it?
