Car smells like mildew. Any causes?

Pretty common when mold starts growing on the evaporator coil. First make sure the evaporator drain line isn't clogged. Then follow the instructions in this article on AC mold

Have an AC specialist fog your evaporator with the special chemical they have for killing mildew and see if that takes care of it. I've also had vehicles with odor coming out of the doors when windows are opened. To take care of that you need to remove the door panels and spray denatured alcohol on everything inside the door.

The problem is definitely in your A/C system. If your A/C needed to be re-charged, it is leaking. Furthermore, you probably have mold in the ducts. You need to have it completely checked out and cleaned.

Butt funk?

I got the car 3 years ago and it was all fine. Until this past few weeks. The car smells like mildew(it's alittle sweet and strong). I don't see any condensation forming on the windows or anything. Nor are the carpets wet in any way. No traces of water inside of the car. I just replaced the cabin air filter last week.

Back in the fall my AC gave up suddenly(blowing hot air) and since winter was coming, I didn't fix it. My mechanic told me that it was losing pressure(when he went to recharge it) but later on I took it to an AC specialist which told me there were no leaks and just needed to be recharged.

I also removed the OE roof cross bars recently that I put on 2 years ago. I also removed the rear spoiler(it's a hatchback) to work on. I did make sure they were put back together right so I didn't have any leaks, but theres still a chance something ain't right.

Can someone guide me in the right direction? If my AC giving off this smell or is it a leak somewhere? The car is a 2008 and I've owned it since 2011. Idk if the AC thermostat has anythjng to do with it but i think there may be something wrong because on a 80 degree day I'll have to switch the temp to 65 for it to blow cold air. Otherwise it just feels like air coming in from outside even when I have recirculating mode on.
