Tools - well you can spend the money on labor and have nothing to show for it except the repari or buy tools and use them over and over again....and you will.
If you try and show interest and join forums specifically for your car type model you will find a world of resources you never new existed and people willing to help sometime even come over and give you a hand. I have personally sync'd carbs and helped with fork rebuilds for people I didn't know because they wanted to learn how to DIY on a specific model of motorcycle.
If you enjoy a challenge, you should get some tools and do the work yourself. Be sure to get a Haynes manual for your car. It'll guide you in making the repairs and tell you what tools you'll need. Besides, you'll be very proud of yourself for the accomplishment.
I dont know what you need to fix on the car but ChrisFix on YouTube has a lot of awesome videos that teach you how to fix cars from oil changes to changing a wheel bearing to brakes. He uses all common hand tools which is awesome and he does all his work in the driveway (no garage needed). He also answers ever comment left on each video so if you have a question, you will get it answered! Check out these videos to learn a ton: https://www.youtube.com/user/PaintballOO...
Is there a vocational school around that teaches car repair? Some of those will repair your car for cheap as they use it as a learning tool.
since the mechanic knows what to do, id go to him/her.
So I bought an old car, and it turned out it needs more work than I expected. My problem is that I can not find a mechanic who really wants to do all the jobs I want and I need on the car, and of course when I'll find one it will cost a lot. My other problem is that I have almost 0 mechanical knowledge, but I bought this car also because I'd like to learn how to work on it and maintain it by myself, but my garage is so small I can barely fit my car in it so I don't have any space to work on it, and specially I have just a few very basic tools.
I like the car and I want to save it ('89 Ford Escort RS Turbo S2), but I need an opinion: what's worth more? To spend a lot of money on a mechanic? Or to spend a lot of money on tools and try to work on it in my tiny garage?
