If you have hit a lot of pot holes due to road condition you may have knocked something loose in the suspension.
Best bet is to have the vehicle checked out.

Is your check engine light on? It could be a misfire. If the light is on, get it scanned. Misfires can have many causes but scanning it will tell you what to look for.
Something else it could be is loose engine mounts. The rubber can wear out on these mounts. This causes the engine to rock a little as it runs, which can cause a knocking sound. You may hear knocking while driving over bumps as well.
One way to rule out most engine knocking is to rev the car. If the sound increases with engine rpm, it is internal, and usually quite bad.
A knock is usually a crank connecting rod bearing that would get WAY louder as the RPM's on the engine increased under load, a ticking or pinging sound is more indicative of a valve train issue. No one can give you the answer if they can't hear it for themselves.
Could be a bad or worn spark plug(s). Could be the kind of gas in it too. If you change the plugs and wires and it still happens, try putting some of that Lucas fuel injector cleaner in the next time you fill up, in case your injectors are gummed up. Try premium or Non-ethanol gas too.
Whenever I'm at a red light or stopped and the car is running it makes a weird knocking noise. It's low but loud enough to be heard inside the car. The steering wheel also shakes a bit while idling. Almost like a old car. It's a 2012 Dodge Avenger with 36 thousand miles. I'm due for a tune up and I might need an alignment (my city's streets are full of ruts and potholes). What do you think it could be?
