That said, it does sound like rod knock, but I completely agree with what Marc said above.
Make a stethoscope out of a piece of 3/8ths tubing a couple of feet long, stick one end in ear, and start probing around engine compartment with other end. Check each valve cover, back by exhaust, wherever sound seems to be coming from.Knocking, ticking comes from rotating/moving parts such as worn bearings, wrist-pins, valve lifters, etc. Check by transmission bellhousing, a broken flex-plate can sound just like a rod-knock. Good luck.
Have you checked the oil? Have you checked the drive belt(s)? Have you opened the hood and looked around while it's making this noise? Do you know how to open the hood? Is it under warranty? Take it back to the dealer.
Your car is still covered by the powertrain warranty. Ask your neighborhood Dodge dealer.
I asked this question earlier but I doubt it my muffler. It's a 2012 Dodge Avenger with 37k miles. When I'm driving or idling it makes this knocking noise like a wood pecker or something. I hear it inside the car coming from the front engine area. Any other ideas what this could be? It could be anything it's been a lemon since I bought it.
