Car battery problems?

Hello

No the egg smell is the battery acid. Cheaper to buy a second hand one.

The fact that it starts on jump leads shows nothing wrong with starting system.

To test the charging system get it started (jump leads) remove jump leads.

Get a Volt Meter and take a reading across your battery and slowly rev up.

If it goes up to Max 14.5 Volts and no more, Charging system is OK

If it goes over 14.5 Volts the Voltage Regulator needs replacing (Part of the Alternator) and may have cooked the battery.

If it does not get up to 14.5 Volts the Drive belt may need adjusting or the Alternator replacing.

Let the car run for 10 minutes to put some power back into the battery.

Switch off engine and take another reading across battery if 12 Volts leave for 20 minutes then check again if still 12 Volts battery is OK

If lower than 12 Volts. Batteries are 6 X 2 Volt cells but will only give you 6 X the lowest so if one cell is damaged 6 X 1.5 Volt = 9 Volts. Your battery is dead and needs replacing. Do the checks but batteries do not like being left that long not being used and the smell all points to dead battery an needs replacing.

the alternator in the car is new

it looks like there is no way out of it except to buy another battery ! sounds like that battery seen better days ! by it smoking like that it sounds like a short in the battery !

go to an auto parts store like auto zone or oreillys and they can charge it up.. if they tell you its a lost cause and the battery will need to be replaced, not really any way around that.

No, that smell is signs of the battery being bad.

Sounds like your batter is bad.

Here is how to check your battery:

i have a old car that was not being used for years and the battery doesnt hold a charge. i jumped the car in the morning, went to class and 2 hours later it was okay. went to a friends house and it was off maybe 30 min and it died again and i had to jump it. got home and an hour or so later its dead again. this morning the car was put on a battery charger to slowly charge and later when i went to check on it there was a rotten egg smell and it was smoking. i shut the battery charger off immediatly and waited a little while.... the car still starts.

is there anyway i can avoid buying a new battery for it ? could it be something else?
