Probably a bad alternator but some Cherokees had the computer controlling the alternator. Probably best to go to a dealership to have it checked, and remind the service writer to tell the tech to check the computer first before replacing the alternator. Most shops will install the alternator twice before realizing the real problem and then charge for a new computer too.
Keep pressing random stuff
Your battery is dead because the alternator is not charging the battery between 13.5 - 14.2 volts with the engine running. What does the volt meter read on your dash with the engine running?
If turns over spray some starter fluid down the throat to elimate the fuel possibly, if that does not work check wires with sensor connection and anything ignition related. If it's turns over normally it's a real head scratcher. CPS, CMS, ALONG WITH MANY OTHER SENSORS. IT SUCKS.
Sounds like your fuse box. Exact same thing happened to our old 2003 Impala. The gauges (speedometer, RPM, battery) would go crazy every now and then, and then the electrics gave out. The fuse box was corroded to hell. I'd take that into consideration.
I have a 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee. It has 230k miles on it. 4.0L Loredo. For the past couple weeks the check gauges light will pop on randomly and the battery gauge will drop. The battery was replaced about 3 months ago. As of today it won't start. If I turn the key it acts as if it wants to crank but stops and I get a rapid clicking noise. I can get it to run off a jump, but if I shut it off and let it sit for a minute. Same situation. I'm thinking its the alternator, but not 100% sure. Any insight is appreciated.
