Absolutely not, That is a complete myth. Synthetic oils has nearly the same properties as conventional oil with the exception of additional detergents and additives. The reason this question comes up so much is because Synthetics often have a stronger detergent additive.what is often the case is that there is a build up of sludge caused by failing to change your oil for extended periods of time, That sludge tends to gum up valve seals and other failed gaskets. Once you introduce the new oil, it starts scrubbing away at the severely degraded oils that remain in the engine as well as the sludge thus revealing the leaks that were once hidden.
Synthetics do many MANY things for an engine, but CAUSING a leak is not one of them
I am no mechanic and if any at all, I only have very basic know-how. A bad gasket or wherever seal that should be that has gone bad WILL LEAK. However, you might be surprised that there are engine oil types that with corresponding additives, assist in helping seal very minute leaks (a really bad gasket needs replacement). It's called high-mileage oil. Just adding that info.
Valvoline MAXLife is one example and has done well for my 2001 Honda which is already showing a bit of head gasket leak. Although I know, time will tell when an absolute repair becomes a must.
Can synthetic cause oil leaks when it gets hot?
Do you read your questions before you submit them???????
No synthetic can cause an oil leak no matter if hot or cold.
Do you think that the scientists, field testers and lab technicians came to the conclusion one fine day at coffee break and said to each other, "O gee, I think we forgot to check how hot we can test that stuff". In other words, your question was the first one that surfaced from the synthetic resisters who traditionally felt petroleum based oils were their final answer. These guys had to have something that looked legit to counter the ever increasing facts about the benefits of synthetics. After sending their oil samples and even the engine parts to an independent lab, it was proven that the synthetic was not the cause of the failure.
A broken gasket will leak synthetic oil But it does not work the other way around. hot or cold.NO
Of course not. A leak is a leak. Oil can never cause this. Synthetic oil is vastly superior to mineral oil and will protect your engine as a result.
Resealing can be more difficult. The oil should not get through some engine areas, but synthetic has been able to on my engines.
Resealing and having success, then several oil changes later, going to synthetic, and finding it gets through where conventional oil did not. since it is a different color, the evidence is clear to me.
Sealing with an elastomeric sealer and preparation with the recommended solvent, then cure time, then putting the oil back in is the most effective correction.
MFR tsb info about sealing, and using their recommended gaskets and procedures is the best warranted fix.
Myth or no myth, if yours leaks, you need proven corrections and these are what I have listed for you. foc
Synthetic oil is thinner, so it can get through small cracks. Conventional oil is thicker, so it can't get through. So yes, synthetic oil can bring out the leaks.
That's a myth. Read this post on synthetic oil myths

A poor sealing or bad gasket causes a leak not the type of oil utilized.
synthetic oil will STOP small leaks in the seals and gaskets.
Find a mechanic and fix your leak instead of hoping regular oil will magically fix the leak!
Josiah - that's wrong. If the weight is the same, the viscosity is the same. Synthetic doesn't break down as fast when heated and cooled or over time. That is why it last longer and is more effective.
you MUST read the owners Manual.
I would have never thought this however my Nissan Pathfinders 2003 manual reads, DO NOT USE A SYNTHETIC OIL IN THIS VEHICLE . So I don't
Synthetic oil will stop the small leakages.
Synthetic oil will stop the small leakages.
synthetic oil will STOP small leaks in the seals and gaskets.
NO. Josiah, the non-mechanic has no clue how *polymers make any multi-viscosity oil thicker as it heats-up! Polymers are also in full synthetic oil.
I think it is a myth. It was commonly heard when synthetics were introduced but I have used both on same engines with no problems.
Yes
Yes
Eh?
Eh?
Yup
ok a lot of wrong answers on this one... syth oil has a lower viscosity than conventional oil. its so it can get in to all the tight spots and do its job to lubricate them. its made to work in motors better than conventional oil and it lasts longer. if your car has been running conventional oil and seemed fine then you switched to synthetic and hear new noises and find new leaks its because the lower viscosity allows it to get past worn or dried out gaskets and the lower viscosity doesn't dampen noises like tapping or pinging like the thick conventional oil. synthetic is better all around and hell why wouldent you want to know if a gasket is worn or a part is rubbing wrong? the you can get it fixed before it fails completely. run it my jeep tjl 4.0 and it purrs
