Can bad O2 sensors make my car die and act like its running outa gas?

Low fuel pressure can cause the engine to run lean, thus giving O2 sensor failures because the engine PCM module mapping has gone out of the acceptable running parameters. Your BF is right, borrow a fuel pressure gauge and test it. My search yields a 53 to 63 psi at the fuel rail on that model. Most auto parts stores with lend them out or you can buy one for about $20 bucks, a whole lot cheaper then swapping out good parts. It could be as simple as a bad fuel pressure regulator sticking.

The O2 sensors do not have enough influence to make the engine run badly. They are reporting an out-of-range condition caused by another problem.

NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO! Do as I write here FIRST! Take $20-40 to ANY OIL CHANGE PLACE and ask them to clean out your IDLE AIR CONTROL VALVE and THROTTLE BODY to SHOWROOM CLEAN! You are NOT supposed to start replacing engine sensors due to a CODE THROW! IT is telling o\you ONE of TWO RELATED THINGS! Either your CONVERTER is overheating or your AIR/FUEL mixture is WAY off base, and is CAUSING your conger to overheat! YOU DO NOT NEED NEW PARTS JUST YET! YOUR FOOT has NOTHING g\t o do with GAS at all! it is NOT a "GAS" pedal but an "AIR" pedal! The IAC adds MORE AIR as needed to make the 2 sensors HAPPY and to keep the converter in it's proper HEAT RANGE! The use of BAD OIL< like VALVOLINE which is NOT used by ANY FACTORY ANYWHERE) wil makes SLUDGE< TAR< and COKE and VARNISH and begin to HEAT GLUE sensors together over time! I USE AMSOIL POWER FOAM to remove ALL traces of OLDER oil that is ENCRUSTED into engine metals,, and sensors! TWENTY DOLLARS will fix the problem EASILY! You have a clogged up IDLE AIR CONTROL VALVE< the IAC! Once it is CLEAN< it will once again ADD MORE AIR, as the O2 sensors TELL IT TO DO! IT IS YOUR OIL CHOICE that make ALL the difference DO NOT USE VALVOLINE< an oil that NO factory sues ANYWHERE! the use of MOBIL ONE 0W-30 or 0W-20 will keep engine CLEAN INSIDE and prevent clogging up of vital SENSORS and MORE! ALSO the use of PENNZOIL ULTRA gives a warranty of 15 years and 500 k miles if you PROVE that you used it after a PENNZOIL REP a\has seen your engine and car! THAT is very IMPRESSIVE< YES! USE ONLY FACTORY COOLANT as well from DIAMOND! ONce the IAC and T body are fully cleaned up, use BOSCH or DENSO IRIDIUM PLUGS to get MORE POWER and ECONOMY by 20%! POWER WASH engines with GUNK orange very few months to keep ROAD SALT and DEBRIS form wiring harnesses and engine metals! This is HOW to care for a MODERN CAR! POWER WASH behind the radiator where leaves,m feathers, paper, and FUZZ collect along with BUG BODIES! This will aid AIR FLOW and keep engine running COOLEST as well! EVERY THING will be FINE once you have a CLEAN IAC and you remove BAD OIL and replace with GREAT OIL! PENNZOIL Is amazing in the U|EURO level, and MOBIL/EXXON provide AIRCRAFT OIL< FUELS and SYNTHETIC LUBRICANTS! VALVOLINE does NOTHING but make money! E-mail me back with your results! rgmuske@yahoo.com

When the 02 sensors going out. Or are out. They typically tell the computer that you are running rich. So it tells the computer cut down on fuel and add more air. If you run with bad 02's you can burn a valve, screw up plugs, clog catalytic converters, lose gas milage, etc.

Replace the 02 sensors.

No, but failure to replace the bad o2 sensor will cause other issues over time. Did the light just come on, or has it been on for a while? If there are no other engine codes, I would say that the fuel pump could be the issue, but have it diagnosed at a reputable local repair shop. I see too many people replace parts needlessly just because someone said "my car did that and it was the XXX".

Its an 06 PT Cruiser. My engine lights on and auto zone said it was my O2 sensors...

My bf said he thinks my fuel pumps going out but it could be the O2 sensors causing it to do it.

After it dies and I start it back up it runs fine. Its just when its been sitting (cooled down) then it dies and all that.
