Can I spin the alternator to charge a dead battery?

Unless you are Superman or the Flash, you wont get any useful charge spinning an alternator by hand.

Now hook a 1hp power drill to it, and spin it at ~1,000 rpm for 10 mins, and you might get some useful charge. But your hand will fall off before you get any useful charge that way.

You can probably turn the alternator with a motor to charge the battery, but not turn by hand. The alternator probably needs to turn 1000 rpm to do any good. Best is if you just use a cheap battery charger.

an alternator can spin all day and never make a bit of power, it must be excited

it needs power to make power. a minimum rpm is also critical. you will not do it by hand.

Probably not

Why not use jump leads?

No. If you're feeling very brave and have access to a car that runs, you can start it up and, whilst it's running, remove the good battery and replace it with the dead one. You'll get a lot of people on here saying it won't work but I've done it numerous times in the days when I was penniless and had to do whatever necessary to repair my bangers!

Keep the battery leads well apart and don't let them touch anything though.

I read somewhere in the comments (to a post about using a 12V cordless drill battery to charge a dead car battery) a reply saying to hook up the drill to the alternator and spin it fast to charge the battery. The problem with that is a lack of space.

Could you undo the tension bolt on the alternator, remove the serpentine belt, and spin the alternator with your hand for 10 minutes to charge the battery? Then just replace the belts and try to start the car.
