Is it safe to drive? Sure, why not. No point in stopping now.
JEEZUS.... get those BRAKES done!!! If you let it go, the CALIPERS will go, and that will be MORE EXPENSIVE. In addition, faulty brakes can lead to an accident, and then you are SOL, because if it does happen, then you will be CITED for FAULTY brakes, thus a LAWSUIT.
Honestly, you are incompetent, and IRRESPONSIBLE, you should not be owning a car. That SQUEAKING is telling you you need pads, and now ROTORS.
cheap brake pads polish shine rotors and brake dust will do this . if use cheep pads ok but grind angels on pads so dust don't build up , if shiny rotors need to be turned. a cheep trick is spray brake quiet spray on rotors and drive will stop sequel for a wile and brake sequel not dangers as long as pads are good and thick
It has not been safe to drive since you heard the grinding! I'll bet the caliper pistons are either frozen or about to blow out of the calipers! When that happens you'll know it. NO BRAKES! Get ready to jump out of the vehicle before the cement truck hits you as you run the red light!
Most brake pads have little pieces of metal that scrape the rotor INDICATING that the pads are WORN. It is NOT SAFE to drive this car. You might be able to drive it to a shop...make sure that you have someone following you when you do so that you can have the vehicle act as a buffer to other cars. You will need to replace the rotors now. Big $$$
squeaky brakes means that the brake pads are wearing thin and need to be replaced SOON.
Its like no more than $50 to replace them yourself.
if you wait too long, the pad will be gone, and you will have grinding brakes and also have a really hard time stopping the car. The grinding can ruin the brake rotors (the things the pads squeeze up onto) and then you start to get into much more expensive repairs. Not to mention if you crash your car because you couldn't stop.
You can drive the car once everything is replaced.
Next time you think it is because the car is old, ask yourself this:
There are thousands of old cars on the road every day. DO they make this sound? no, they don't. so something is wrong.
we have a 2006 jeep liberty and have been driving with unbearably squeaky brakes for about a year and a half now, but we always thought it was just the car getting old and rusting. it wasn't until yesterday that i found out it was because the brake pads had worn down on the roters. we're planning to get it fixed soon but its been going metal on metal for a good year and a half now, my question is is it still safe to drive this car or is it to risky?
