Chances are good that you don't need all or any of them, this is often a job that gets over sold because it's a bone head job that the big hammer guys used to make all their money off. Take it to another shop and ask them to check it and show you if anthing really needs to be replaced and then decide but they are not easy to do without experience and the right tools.
likely the lower one's as they carry weight on them, stress from driving etc .... however you will need to drill out the rivets and use a fork like tool to pop out the ball joint - new ones are bolted in - took me quit awhile to get the old out , but , no time at all to install the new ones - I paid 100 dollars for each ball joint as I wanted to put in good one's and never have to do it again. Since your at this , replace the tie rods as well. then take to a garage for alignment. No car/truck is cheap to own...
just put your truck on jacks and move the wheel to see where there is play, there shouldn't be any. Your best best though is to replace the whole control arm, upper and lower, as these are common wear parts. it is also easier and more cost effective in the long run to replace the arm as a whole rather than just the ball joints
HI there is one upper and one lower on each side in the front
good luck

I have a 1985 Chevy k10 1/2 ton pickup I need new ball joints, the place I went to wants $250 for each side I'm 17 and do not want to pay that much as I can barely afford gas and insurance haha I need to know how many I need for each side and types, cause there are upper and lowers and I'm just not sure, from what I can see there is 4 on each side? I'm not sure how many I need or what kind I need like upper or lower, I can easily do it myself, just need help on what to buy I've researched them and found them ranging from $10-$30 for each one I want to order them and do it myself but like I said not sure what to buy not sure if I gave enough info but anything helps thanks in advance!!
